Gustav

I’ve heard that Hurricane Gustav is heading for New Orleans, and the Mayor of New Orleans has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city.  The experts are saying it is going to be the worse hurricane they’ve seen to date and if they don’t evacuate then they are going to be sitting on their rooftops surrounded by water, waiting for rescue.  He essentially told the residents “if you don’t get out, you’ll be on your own.”

I just can’t even imagine living in an area that is so susceptible to that much damage from such frequent hurricanes!  I know a lot of people were born and raised there and feel like they are “stuck” there, which really is too bad.  It would be nice if the government would come up with a program to buy their homes and turn those areas into parks so that the people could afford to move someplace safer!

School cafeterias are dumping trays

I was reading an article on a news website that I found called livescience.com that states that many schools have decided to stop supplying trays to their students.  They think that this will save energy, by not having to wash the trays.  The article indicated that they students are not very happy with the decision, as it makes carrying their food to their tables a lot more difficult.

Amazing Olympics

I have been so excited to be able to watch the Olympics from time to time.  I think it is incredible that Michael Phelps has managed to win so many gold medals!  Absolutely an amazing record-setting feat!  I can imagine he’s going to be set for life financially now with all of the endorsement offers he’ll be getting!  I wonder if Hollywood will produce a movie about his life and training and his Olympic performance!

Batteries

A friend of mine sent me a link to a video that shows how to extend the life of “dead” batteries!  I couldn’t believe it was possible - dead means dead, right?  So I went to the video and watched it - it looks like it really could work, although if used improperly could make the batteries leak, which could damage the flashlight (or whatever) they are being used to power.  I think I’ll give it a try myself on a cheap flashlight next time some batteries die!  If you want to see it for yourself, click here.

Shopping for a new video camera

I decided that I need a new video camera; my old one is worn out.  So it just so happens that a new flyer came in the mail from the local electronics store with several cameras featured on sale this week.  One deal I saw was that if you buy a new video camera, they throw in a new 8 pixel digital camera.  I thought it was probably too good to be true, but I decided to go check it out anyway.  I shopped around the store for a while, looking at the different models and prices.  Each time it brought me back to the same one where the video camera was a good camera, and they throw in the digital camera.  And it was the best deal of the day!  So I bought it and brought it home.  The video camera is easy to use - I tried it out immediately and it works great!  I assume the digital camera will work just as well too!
