Not really sure what the heck is going on around here lately, but we seem to be getting more birth announcements in the mail more than usual right now. And what is really weird is that each and every one of them are announcing the births of baby boys and these are some pretty darned big boys that are coming into the world right now. There hasn’t been a single one that is less than 8 1/2 pounds, most have been 9 pounds and over!

It’s interesting to see some of the names that are being given to these little guys. There hasn’t been a John, William, Jack, Michael, Steve or Joe or any of the usual boy names that were so popular back in our day. But more like Brody, Tristan, Jaden, Jaxon and Colton, just to name a few that I can remember at this point. At least they haven’t been totally off the wall like some of the ones that are always being talked about on the Internet that today’s celebrities are giving to their off springs. These folks have really gone off the deep end and I feel so sorry for those kids that will have to live with these wacky names for the rest of their lives unless of course they go to court and pay to have their “unique” names changed.

Alicia Silverstone named her baby boy Bear Blu. And Kate Hudson named her son Bingham Hawn Bellamy. I’m sorry but I can’t help but wonder why these people think that this is a good idea, makes me wonder what they have been drinking or drugging to come up with such things. Don’t get me wrong, unique names aren’t a bad thing but I do think that so many of them have just crossed the line all for the sake of getting more publicity. But that’s just my opinion.

There was an article that I read in the New York Times recently about how to save money on eye care. I guess there are going to be a lot of articles in the papers (and television news) about how people can save money now that the economy is so bad and not getting any better any time soon! The article was educating the general public about how people really don’t need to have their eyes checked as often as they have been taught to think, and the article was talking about shopping around for deals on eyeglasses. One of the mistakes many people make is to buy their eyeglasses straight from the little store attached to their eye doctor’s office. Those glasses are always really expensive! And many insurance plans cover the cost of the exam, but not of the glasses! I know that’s how MY insurance works!

Easy money is always a temptation. It’s going to be even more of a temptation in this economy. As long as I can remember, there have been scams to make people believe that it is easy to Make Money at Home by signing up to a specific program, and sending in some kind of fee or payment to get started.

Those type of programs make me really nervous. I’d like to Make Money Online. Who wouldn’t? I’d love to just stay in my pajamas most of the day, work at my own pace at my own convenience and Make Money from home, And I know that those types of opportunities DO exist. But I’ve also seen a lot of television news articles about how a lot of those advertised opportunities are scams, so I am really cautious about signing up with any kind of program that sounds “too good to be true.” I’d really like to hear from someone that I know personally and trust that they have done it themselves and then they prove to me that it works for them.

It amazes me to find out that the very famous doll the they call Barbie is turning 53 years old today. My sisters were total Barbie fans and they always wanted me to play with them, which I totally refused to do even when my mother caved in from their nagging and bought a Ken doll to try and entice me into joining in with them. Even a promise of a G.I. Joe wouldn’t do the trick, silly girls.

Anyway- Happy Birthday to Ms. Barbie! Hope my sisters read this.

My sister was telling me about the horrible weather she and her household experienced yesterday. They apparently were right on the outskirts of some of the horrible tornadoes that were ripping through the country yesterday and last night. She told me that when they looked out their window there was hail the size of golf balls coming in torrents, bouncing up higher than their house after they hit the ground. She said that the noise they made when they hit her roof was the loudest noise she could ever remember hearing.

Her dogs were terrified, and she put leashes on all of them and tried to keep them together near the front door of the house. She said that was in case they had to vacate the house in a hurry. I was rather surprised to hear her say that because I thought that the advice for tornadoes is to try to stay as close to the center of the house as possible, like in a closet or bathroom.

But thankfully her house was not damaged, and her cars survived too. I am really grateful for that. I don’t know if I could have handled the situation any better than she did.

I was reading an article on the Time.com website about how high-end high alcohol beers and becoming more popular. These beers are sometimes being brewed by smaller, less well known breweries than the mainstream breweries, and are intended to compete with wine rather than the “average” run of the mill beer. These beers often have more than twice the alcohol content than “regular” beer. One of these beers was developed by the makers of Samuel Adams Beer and has been named “Utopia” beer and sells for $140 per 24 ounce bottle. The article was talking about how these beers are “richer” and because of that people would not WANT to drink more, they would drink less.

Most of the people that I know would rather drink MORE beer, not less! I can’t imagine going to a barbecue picnic and only drinking one beer, it would not seem like a party to limit oneself to only one! After that one beer is gone and you’re thirsty again, then what would you drink? I guess this is the kind of beer one would order at a restaurant where you are only going to be there a short time.

Do you know what parthenogenesis means? I didn’t until I read it in an article that was talking about how a second case of asexual reproduction in sharks was documented in Virginia Beach in October of 2008. It seems that a female blacktip shark, having been the only kind of her species in an aquarium, gave birth without benefit of having a mate. The article also mentions that last year a hammerhead shark in a zoo in Omaha also gave birth without benefit of mating.

I found this to be quite fascinating! I knew that there were some animals that could do that, but not sharks! Considering how many people are afraid of sharks, this could be very scary news to some people. I would not be surprised to see this story on the Colbert Report’s threat down!

A few folks lost power, most had generators that kept them being totally in the dark. A few trees are down here and there, but no serious damage or injuries have been reported and I’m am so grateful for that. We can all now stop and count our blessings and hopefully get things back to normal and enjoy what is left of the summer season.
